In one of our previous blogs, we talked about some techniques to help you germinate your seeds. Now let’s talk strains, and in particular, the classic: Jack Herer.

Keep reading as we discuss some basics that make this cultivar one of the most famous in the world, for cannabis novices and longtime enthusiasts alike!

Who is Jack Herer?

Jack Herer was a cannabis activist and author of the 1985 non-fiction book, The Emperor Wears No Clothes, which serves as an anthology of the history of cannabis and hemp and all of its uses. In it, Herer explains his position quite clearly:

“If all fossil fuels and their derivatives, as well as trees for paper and construction were banned in order to save the planet, reverse the Greenhouse Effect and stop deforestation; then there is only one known annually renewable natural resource that is capable of providing the overall majority of the world’s paper and textiles; meet all of the world’s transportation, industrial and home energy needs, while simultaneously reducing pollution, rebuilding the soil, and cleaning the atmosphere all at the same time… and that substance is — the same one that did it all before — Cannabis Hemp…”

The 14th edition of the book was published in 2020 and has been cited in countless cannabis rescheduling and re-legalization efforts.

Talking About Lineage

Jack Herer, which also goes by “JH,” “The Jack,” “Premium Jack,” and “Platinum Jack,” is a sativa-dominant hybrid named after famed cannabis activist Jack Herer. To honor Herer’s efforts, the Jack Herer strain was developed by Sensi Seeds in the Netherlands in the 1990s.

Its parent strains Shiva Skunk (indica), Northern Lights #5 (indica), and Haze (sativa) were found to pack a powerful punch, which led to Dutch pharmacies and medicinal practitioners to quickly pick it up for their practices as a recognized medical-grade strain.

This strain smells like peppered spice with an intense fruity undertone. Jack Herer has become such a staple that it became the parent strain for several other hybrid strains such as Jack Skellington, Jack the Ripper, Critical Jack, and Jack’s Cleaner.

Growing the Jack Herer Cultivar

Jack Herer is known as a relatively easy strain to cultivate, even for beginners. The strain is relatively disease-resistant as well as resistant to powdery mildew, molds, pests, bugs and more.

It can be grown both indoors and outdoors; however, to survive outdoors, Jack Herer requires dry, balmy, sunny, warm weather. The plant can yield 18 ounces per metered square indoors or 18 ounces per plant outdoors, and it takes only about 7-10 weeks to flower.

Harvest takes place around late September and early October, and the plant can grow above two meters tall. Its ease of cultivation solidifies its place as a premier plant for medical dispensaries, recreational shops, and professional growing facilities.
