For over 30 years, at Premium Seed Market, we have tested hundreds of strains to provide our customers with only the best. Not only do we want to provide the best product, but we also want to provide information and education that will allow our customers to thrive in their own cultivation process.

In a previous blog, we talked about the popular sativa-dominant strain, Jack Herer, named after the famous and influential cannabis activist. In this blog, we will be doing a deep dive on an indica-dominant classic, Dogwalker OG, while also discussing the benefits of growing indica-dominant strains.

Talking Cannabis Genetics: Dogwalker OG

Dogwalker OG is an indica-dominant hybrid strain (80% indica/20% sativa) that is said to be created from the parent strains, Albert Walker OG and Chemdawg 91. It is popular for its calming and focusing effects, but if you are not deliberate in your use, it will surely walk you like a dog. Beginners should tread lightly when using this strain. Large doses of this strain can cause serious sleepiness.

Medical cannabis patients prefer this strain for its pain relief and appetite stimulating properties. So while it may be an intense experience at first, it can also be an intensely impactful source of relief from pain, insomnia, stress, etc.

The name ‘Dogwalker OG’ is derived from its parent strain names, but this strain is also aptly described as smelling like “wet dog.” Consumers typically use Dogwalker OG in the afternoon or in the evening.

Notable Terpenes

Terpenes are the compounds in each cannabis strain that determine its smell as well as its effects. Here are a few of the most abundant terpenes that are found within the Dogwalker OG strain, as well as some of their characteristics:

  • The dominant terpene in Dogwalker OG is Limonene. It has a citrus aroma and is the terpene responsible for creating a sense of euphoria.

However, as mentioned before, the citrus is masked by a powerful earthy aroma.

  • Myrcene is another terpene found in Dogwalker OG. It provides this strain’s calming effects and also creates its earthy profile.

This terpene is also responsible for the insomnia-reducing effects of this strain.

  • Caryophyllene is the third most abundant terpene in Dogwalker OG. It has a spicy profile to it, as it is also found in black pepper, basil, and oregano.

The great thing about caryophyllene is that it can act as a cannabinoid and activate our endocannabinoid system.

This interaction causes anti-inflammatory effects, which lends itself to the significant healing properties of this strain.

What are the potential benefits of growing ‘Indica-Dominant’ cannabis flower?

Indica-dominant strains are a great investment when it comes to cultivation. First, they are shorter and stouter than sativa-dominant strains. This means the plants take up less space and won’t be towering tall.

Also, indica-dominant plants are sturdier and more able to grow in colder climates than sativa-dominant strains. Indica-dominant plants also mature faster than sativa-dominant plants, which means you can harvest the flower more quickly and more often.

Dogwalker OG yields 16 to 20 ounces per square meter indoors and 20 ounces or more per plant outdoors. All in all, growing indica-dominant strains has the potential to maximize your harvest, which all growers can agree is perhaps the one thing that they all strive for. Happy Growing!
