When you think of cloning, you might think of a sci-fi experiment from a movie. But did you know you can clone cannabis? The process of cloning cannabis can be done on your own if you have the right knowledge and the right plants to start with.
In this blog, we will teach you what cloning is, why cloning is beneficial, and how the process works.
What is ‘Cloning’?
Cloning is the process of taking a portion of an existing cannabis plant, cutting off a piece of it, and letting it develop roots to grow on its own. The plants will then grow separately and identically.
The cannabis clone will have the same genetics and gender as the parent plant. Simply put: cloning is a cheap and quick way to cultivate larger amounts of cannabis plants with targeted traits.
Why Should You Consider Cloning Your Cannabis Plants?
Cloning cannabis should be considered by all cannabis cultivators no matter your experience level or specifications. Here are some of the main reasons why cloning cannabis is worth looking into:
Cloning speeds up the growing process – The cloned plant starts at the same point in the growing process as the parent plant. Instead of waiting for seeds to germinate and grow, the clone plant can pick up where the parent plant left off.
Cloning can be done from the time the plant is 8 weeks old up until a few weeks before harvest – The window for cloning cannabis is open until a few weeks before harvest, which means that you have plenty of opportunities to find your strongest plants with the best traits in order to clone them.
Cloning is an accurate way to duplicate preferred plants – If there is a plant that you are really proud of, the good news is: you can make an exact replica of it through cloning! Because it has the same exact genetics as the parent plant, you don’t have to worry about what the outcome will be. You already know.
What You’ll Need:
So you have decided to clone your cannabis plants. Awesome! Here is what you are going to need:
- A strong mother plant
- Scissors or plant clippers
- Starter cubes to promote healthy root growth
- Cloning gels and/or rooting hormones to support root growth
Perhaps the most important part of cloning is picking a mother plant. It has to be a female plant in its vegetative state that is at least 8 weeks old. In order to prepare your plant for cloning, stop giving it nutrients so that the amount of nitrogen in the leaves is reduced.
When the plant has less nitrogen, it is no longer in its vegetative state and knows it needs to grow roots. If your mother plant was cultivated indoors, the clone should be grown indoors, and the same goes for outdoor plants.
The Cloning Process
Ok, you’ve got your mother plant and setup? Now we can get cloning:
- Make sure your clippers are clean!
- Make your cut. (Be sure you’re making 45-degree cuts using new growth, your clipping should be at least 4 inches long.)
- Properly apply your preferred rooting hormone.
- Place the clippings into your starter cubes.
- Clones are ready for transplanting after several weeks (or when you see roots popping out of the bottom of the cubes!)
